Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey stretches hamstrings vs. Texans; severity unknown

Although the Panthers are set to start the season 3-0, there are bigger concerns for Carolina.

Carolina head coach Matt Roulette said after the game that standout running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a strained hamstring in the Panthers' win over the Texans on Thursday night. Roulette said he did not know the severity of the injury.

McCaffrey left the field and moved into the Blue Medical Tent in the second quarter, in which he could be seen favoring his leg without contact after a run. Later on the broadcast it was announced that McCaffrey was out and the Panthers announced it shortly thereafter.

While the severity or comeback timetable for McCaffrey is unknown, Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold said he told CMC to take his time to make sure he is fully recovered when he returns.

"We'll be fine without him," Darnold said. "Obviously we want him back, but I want him to take his time right now and make sure he is good for the end of the season.

" McCaffrey's 2020 season was cut to just three games due to shoulder and ankle injuries.

Entering the second quarter on Monday, McCaffrey looked like his old self. It all turned on a nine-yard run off left tackle in which he ran out of bounds and then went into the medical tent.

Running backs Chuba Hubbard and Royce Freeman will now play a big part in the backfield for Carolina.

The injury ended McCaffrey's evening with seven carries for 31 yards and two receptions for nine yards.

How much more production can CMC give to the Panthers this season is the main question now.
