Modi government is helpless in the Rajya Sabha on three divorces, Congress figures show strength.

The Modi government introduced the three divorced bills in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after passing the Lok Sabha. However here he is facing huge difficulties in passing this bill. The BJP-led NDA is in power with 19 states, but it does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, due to which the Modi government is seen as helpless in front of the Opposition Congress.

To pass the three divorced bills from the Rajya Sabha, the BJP needs with the other parties. In the 245-member Rajya Sabha, there are 88 MPs of the NDA (including 57 BJP MPs), Congress 57, SP's 18, BJD 8 MPs, AIADMK 13, Trinamool Congress 12 and NCP 5 MPs.

Even if the government gets all its allies together, even at least 35 more MPs will need support to pass the bill. This bill is opposed by several political parties including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), AIADMK, SP and Trinamool Congress. Congress is on the demand to amend this bill and send it to the Select Committee.

On Wednesday, Congress leader Anand Sharma proposed the proposal for three divorce billboards. The government is trying to pass it without any amendment to the House, after which there was a fierce ruckus and the deputy chairman adjourned the proceeding until Thursday. Earlier, the Modi government had passed three divorced bills without amendment in the Lok Sabha.

Anand Sharma gave the name of the members of the opposition parties to the Deputy Chairman, who will be in the Select Committee. Among them were three Congressmen. Sharma said that the government suggested the names of its members. The Congress leader said that the independent committee will submit its suggestions during the budget session. They said that the government should accept the first amendments and then send the bill to the independent committee.

SC gave the government the law to make it 6 months time.

The three divorces i.e. Divorce-e-Bidt has already been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. On August 22, the five-judge bench of the apex court had declared three divorces as unconstitutional and illegal in the majority. At the same time, the Modi government had asked to make laws to protect the rights of Muslim women. During the discussion on the three divorced bills in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the government also referred to the Supreme Court's decision.
