I have a hunger for absurd adventure movies. I resist the bad guys, but when a "Congo" or "Anaconda" comes along, my heart jumps and I'm in. "The Mummy" is one such film. I can hardly say anything in favor of it except that I was delighted with almost every minute of it. I can't argue for the script, direction, acting or even mommy, but I can say that I wasn't bored and at times I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity hidden in the storks of even the most prudent of us, and we should cherish it.
It's a movie about a man who fooled with Pharaoh's mistress and lived (and died, and lived again) only to regret it. As his punishment he is "mummified alive," sealed inside a coffin with thousands of flesh-eating beetles (which flesh "very slowly," we learn). Millennia Pass. In the 1920s, a French foreign general named Rick meets a librarian named Evelyn, and joins him and his brother on a mindless quest to find the city of the dead, Hamunaptra. (Sample dialogue: "Are we talking about Hamunaptra?") They join a race with other fortune hunters who have heard of untold treasures buried under the sand, while in the meantime the high priests The descendants of, who have guarded the city for 3,000 years, proceed against them.

There's a good reason not to bother the mummy named Imhotep. If he is brought back to life, he will "produce walking sickness," we learn, and 10 proverbial plagues over Egypt, of which I have seen locusts, fireballs from the sky, during the film. Count the rivers flowing with blood. , earthquakes, and flies. Also flesh-eating beetles, though I wasn't sure if they were a plague or came with the area.
Brendan Fraser plays Rick, a low-rent Indiana Jones who single-handedly fights his way through a horrific series of battles. Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) is too clumsy to be of much help (in a delightful opening scene, she knocks on a bookcase and every single bookcase at the Domino Effect Antiques Museum). Her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) is a spoiled rich kid who specializes in the acids used to make butlers. Arnold Woslu plays Imhotep the Mummy in later scenes, when Imhotep has absorbed enough victims' internal organs to reorganize himself. In earlier scenes, Imhotep is a terrifying special effects creature that appears to be made of decomposed cardboard and leaves a cloud of dust behind every time Rick bites it.
None of this has anything to do with the great horror classic "The Mummy" (1932), which featured an oddly poignant performance by Boris Karloff as a long-dead priest who returns to life and Falls in love with the modern reincarnation of the woman. He died for There is no violence to speak of in the 1932 film; There's hardly any action really, and the chills come through in slow sensations (hey, does that mom walk?).This 1999 mummy actually harbors some grudges about his feelings for Evelyn, who may be a descendant of Pharaoh's mistress from his mother's side. But the bass on his voice synthesizer was set to "rumble", and so I wasn't quite sure what he said. It sounded vaguely affectionate, the way a pit bull growling on a T-bone sounds affectionate, but how can Imhotep focus on rekindling a 3,000-year-old romance when he's had 10 plagues? ?
There's a lot of funny dialogue in the film, of which my favorite is a line from Evelyn when she hears a suspicious noise in the museum library: "Abdul? Mohammed? Bob?" I liked the Goldfinger paint job on the priests in ancient Thebes. And just as a beetle got into a man's shoe and traveled through his body, a lump beneath his flesh, until it could feed on his brain. And just as the characters were always reading the wrong pages of ancient books and accidentally raising the dead.
